Steuben barn blaze injures man

A man was seriously burned early Tuesday while trying to extinguish a shed and barn fire in Steuben County, according to the Orland Volunteer Fire Department.

Fire crews were sent to 8125 W. Indiana 120 about 1:30 a.m. When they arrived, the shed was engulfed in flames, and the adjacent barn was also on fire, the fire department said.

The family that lives at the address told fire officials they were awakened by what sounded like fireworks going off and discovered the fire. A family member, Zebekiah Wheeler, told officials he was trying to put out the blaze when he was burned.

Medics took Wheeler to a hospital, and an Orland firefighter was treated at the scene for breathing difficulties.

Along with Orland firefighters, the Fremont Fire Department helped battle the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
